This photograph was taken at Ta Prohm one of the temples at the Angkor complex near Siem Reap in Cambodia. It was pointed out to me as a dinosaur. I think it looks a lot like a Stegosaurus.
I’m not naive enough to believe that all of the designs and pictures that grace the walls of any temples or buildings represent something seen by the people who built the temples. A kid sketching in the sand out the front of Ta Som was drawing people and his mixed perspective made it look like there was an alien towering over a group of people.
But it still makes me think. Ta Prohm was built about 1180AD by King Jayavarman VII at the height of the Angkorian civilisation. Did they know about dinosaurs?
A quick look at http://blogs.smithsonianmag.com/dinosaur/2009/03/stegosaurus-rhinoceros-hoax/ quickly discounts any possibility that dinosaurs/humans existed at the same time. This is a theory I’m inclined to agree with because I quite firmly believe in the big bang theorem (despite the blog offering little to no actual evidence of anything). However, does this mean, that there is a small chance that maybe, the people of Angkor knew about dinosaurs? I’m thinking something like they found a skeleton rather than co-habited with, but it still makes you think… Doesn’t it?
